Three American veterans of the legendary "Flying Tigers" air squadron made
a special trip to Dianchi Lake in southwest China's Yunnan province, where
the wreckage of a fighter plane is being salvaged.
The Flying Tigers fighter crashed into the lake near Kunming, capital of Yunnan
province, during a training flight in April 1942. The pilot, John Blackburn,
from Texas, was killed. His body was recovered, but the plane has remained
in the lake for six decades.
The Flying Tigers — so named because they painted tiger shark mouths on the
noses of their planes — was a group of 97 U.S. pilots who helped the Chinese
Air Force protect China's vital supply route, during its war with Japan 60
years ago. It was formed by General Claire Lee Chennault, commander of the
US 14th Air Fleet.
The Tigers, who flew under the Chinese flag, also went on to attack Japanese
military bases in northern Thailand during their yearlong campaign.
Some of the Tiger pilots were killed during the war and people have been searching
for their remains in China's southwestern mountainous regions for the past
20 years.
