The Gold Coast is the fastest growing city in Australia, a position it has held
for the last 25 years; growing annually by more than 14,000 new residents.The Gold
Coast City's economic growth rate is 2.7 times the national average. The sixth
largest city in Australia, the population of the Gold Coast now at over 460,000
people is expected to nearly double by 2021.
As part of an ongoing two year project, Australian photographer Trent Parke
looks at a variety of issues surrounding Australia's rapidly changing coastline.
With the price of homes soaring, high-rise apartments have risen like weeds overtaking
the small coastal towns. Small corner shops have been replaced with suburban shopping
malls and fast food chains. Signs clutter streets and minds. Parke explores the
modern world as a consumer's world in which we are constantly reminded to buy,
buy, buy. In his own words, he is taking ' the real world and putting it all up
for sale'.
