5月12日下午，四川汶川发生7.8级地震，湖北恩施震感强烈。湖北民院迅速采取紧急措施，为防止余震再度发生，该校保卫处迅速关闭了所有教室楼栋，疏散了两万余名师生，师生都站在一些开阔的地方。

5月12日，成都都江堰市一些车辆被埋在垮塌的废墟里。
都江堰市部分设施受损，多处房屋发生倒塌
位于成都北郊的成都军区总医院接收了来自地震灾区的100多名伤员。在积极组织抢救的同时，医院搭建10余顶大型帐篷，将住院的1000多名患者全部安全转移。

12日下午，在突如其来的地震中，都江堰市聚源镇中学一栋教学楼垮塌，部分学生被埋，至12日19时56分，记者在都江堰市聚源镇中学事故现场发现，死亡人数已增至50余人。当地有关部门正在紧急抢救。
