Lots of people have seen the photograph of the young tourist standing
on the roof of the World Trade Center on the morning of September
11. It was 1)apparently taken a few seconds before the 2)hijacked
planes hit. Many people also heard and 3)passed on the story of
the old man who "4)surfed the 5)rubble" down from the 85th floor
to safety.

Neither of these stories were true, but their spread shows how
quickly 1)rumors can be passed on, particularly through the Internet.
If enough people pass on a story, it may 2)qualify for the 3)title
of urban legend: a modern, 4)fictional story, told as truth,
which reaches a wide audience by being passed on from person to
person. Usually the original source of the story is very hard to
5)trace.

For example, in 1994 there were several reports in 1)mainstream
American newspapers that teams of "2)organ 3)harvesters" were at
work. A typical 4)version of the story tells of a man who goes to
Las Vegas for a 5)convention. He meets a beautiful girl in a bar,
and they have some drinks together.
1) mainstream (a.) 主流的
2) organ (n.) 器官
3) harvester (n.)
4) version (n.) 版本

4.
The next thing the man remembers, he is in his hotel room lying
in a bathtub full of ice. There is a phone by the side of the
bathtub with a note on it. The note says, "Call the hospital or
you will die." He calls an 1)ambulance and is 2)rushed to a hospital,
where the doctor tells him that someone has 3)removed one of his
4)kidneys, probably to sell.

The story is totally untrue, but it does have several very clear
messages. First, be careful when you visit big cities. Second,
don't try to 1)pick up strangers in bars. And third, don't drink
too much. It is a 2)cautionary tale, just like the ones our parents
told when we were kids.

1) pick up (phr.)(口)钓(异性)
2) cautionary (a.)
6.
Why do we so often believe urban legends? One of the main reasons
is that when the stories are passed on, they always happen to "a
friend of a friend." You 1)trust your friend, so why wouldn't you
believe his story? Then, when you pass the story on, it's much
easier to just say it happened to your classmate's friend rather
than say my friend's friend's friend. No matter how many people
pass the story on, it always seems that you are only a couple of
people away from what actually happened.
1) trust (v.) 信任
7.
The urban legends that spread most quickly are the ones related
to something that many people fear. 1)Currently, in America, things
like 2)terrorism and bio-warfare are on top of the fear list. It
doesn't seem to matter how much accurate information we have 3)
access to; we still love rumors and 4)bizarre stories. That's why
every year sees new urban legends. Some of the most famous have
even been collected into books on the topic.
1) currently (adv.)
2) terrorism (n.)
3) access (n.)
4) bizarre (a.)
8.
Oh, and by the way, did you know that if you leave a tooth in a
glass of Coca-Cola it will 1)dissolve overnight? It happened to
my uncle's friend, honestly.
1) dissolve (v.) 溶解
